MNHS researchers, alumni and health sector colleagues recognised in King’s Birthday 2024 Honours List
Monash Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences researchers, alumni and health sector colleagues are among over 700 people recognised in the King’s Birthday 2024 Honours List, released today by the Governer-General. The Australian Honours and Awards system recognises and celebrates the outstanding service and contributions of Australians from across the country and from all walks of life.
Congratulations to all recipients, including:
Officer of the Order of Australia (AO)
Professor Ross Coppel AO - For distinguished service to science as a microbiologist, to tertiary education, to board and advisory roles, and to innovation.
Professor Coppel is the faculty’s Deputy Dean, Strategy and Innovation, and was also Deputy Dean and Director of Research from 2010-2021 and a Member of the Monash University Council from 2016-2021. He was the founding director of the Victorian Bioinformatics Consortium 2000-2015, the Head of Microbiology from 1994-1998 and has been a Professor of Microbiology at Monash since 1994.
Professor Coppel is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and served as a member of the NHMRC Research Committee. He is the current chair of the Scientific Reference Group, Hazelwood Health Study, Victorian Department of Health and a member of the Medical Science Review Board, Australia/Israel Medical Research (AUSiMED).
Professor Jo Anne Douglass AO - For distinguished service to medical research, to clinical immunology and allergy, to respiratory medicine, and to tertiary education.
Professor Douglass is the current head of the Department of Medicine, Melbourne Medical School and Director of Research at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. She was Head of the Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology Service, Department of Allergy, Immunology and Respiratory Medicine at The Alfred from 2003-2012, and a consultant physician in the department from 1996-2003. She was also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Central Clinical School from 2009-2012, an Associate Professor/Director of Academic Programs in the Central Clinical School and Honorary Clinical Associate Professor of the Department of Medicine from 2003-2007.
Member of the Order of Australia (AM)
Emeritus Professor Thea Brown AM - For significant service to social welfare, particularly through family violence and child protection research.
Professor Brown has been an Emeritus Professor of the Department of Social Work at Monash since 2013. She was a Professor of Social Work and head of the department from 1987-2013. She was the Director of International Programs from 2004-2007, the Deputy Head of Department from 1985-1986 and the chair of Residential Services from 1995-2004. Professor Brown is also the co-convener of the Monash Deakin Filicide Research Hub and chair of the Addressing Filicide International Conference Series, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019.
Dr Sherene Devanesen AM - For significant service to community health through governance and administrative roles.
Dr Sherene Devanesen was Chief Executive of Peninsula Health from 2004-2014, the Executive Director of Medical Services and Research at The Alfred from 1999-2000. She was also the General Manager of Acute Health in the Peninsula Health Care Network from 1995-1999, and the Director and Deputy Director Medical Services at Frankston Hospital from 1988-1995. Dr Devanesen was also a member of the Monash Comprehensive Cancer Consortium management committee from 2010-2014.
Professor Elizabeth Hartland AM - For significant service to medical research, particularly microbiology, and to tertiary education.
Professor Hartland is the Director and CEO of the Hudson Institute of Medical Research, and the Head of the Department of Molecular and Translational Sciences in the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health. She is also the Research Group Head, Innate Immune Responses to Infection and has been a National Health and Medical Research Council council member since 2021.
The late Mr Jacob Goldstein AM - For significant service to medicine as a cardiothoracic surgeon, and as a surgical mentor
Mr Goldstein was a cardiothoracic surgeon at Monash Health, The Alfred and Cabrini Private Hospital, and head of the Cardiothoracic Unit at Monash Health from 1994-2017. He was also a supervisor of cardiothoracic training from 1989-2017 and an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery at Monash University from 1992-2022.

Dr Amanda Baric AM - For significant service to anaesthesiology, to pain medicine, and to tertiary education.
Dr Paul Gaudry AM - For significant service to emergency and forensic medicine, and to professional associations.
Professor Sharon Goldfeld AM - For significant service to paediatric medicine as a clinician and academic, and to public health research.
Niharika Hiremath OAM - For service to community health.
Dr Stephen Langford OAM - For service to medicine, to rural health, and to medical education.
Ms Maureen McInerney OAM - For service to the community through social welfare roles.
Ms Sakshi Thakur OAM - For service to the community through social welfare organisations.
Clinical Professor Daryl Williams AM - For significant service to anaesthesiology and pain medicine.
