MNHS researchers elected as 2025 new Fellows of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences
Professor Yuming Guo, Professor Dan Lubman AM and Professor José Polo have been elected as 2025 new Fellows of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS), the nation’s learned academy for the most influential experts in health and medicine.
Fellows were elected in recognition of their outstanding achievements and exceptional contributions to the health and medical sector, and were acknowledged for their clinical, non-clinical, leadership, industry and research contributions.
“Congratulations to Professor Guo, Professor Lubman and Professor Polo on their election as new Fellows of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences,” said Executive Dean of Monash Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Professor Christina Mitchell AO. “Their contributions to environmental health, addiction, stem cell and epigenetics research have been profound and influential, here and overseas, and their recognition by the Academy is richly deserved.”

Professor Yuming Guo FTSE, FASSA, FAHMS - Distinguished Professor, Global Environmental Health and Biostatistics; Head, Monash Climate, Air Quality Research (CARE), School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
Professor Yuming Guo is a globally recognised environmental epidemiologist who has made significant contributions to combat health risks from climate change and air pollution.
His world-leading research has led to novel environmental exposure assessment for accurate health risk assessment with remote sensing and machine learning. His long-term global environmental health risk research has significantly improved public health practice worldwide.
He was named as the world’s top climate scientist by Reuters and the top researcher in Occupational and Environmental Medicine by The Australian. Overall, Professor Guo has significantly improved the science of climate change, air pollution and human health globally.
Professor Dan Lubman AM FAHMS- Executive Clinical Director, Turning Point; Director, Monash Addiction Research Centre; Professor of Addiction Studies and Services, Eastern Health Clinical School.
Professor Dan Lubman AM is an internationally renowned expert in addiction, with extensive contributions to research, clinical care, and policy in Australia.
As Director of Turning Point and the Monash Addiction Research Centre, he has led pioneering studies on the impact of alcohol, drugs, and gambling on brain function and mental health, developed and trialled innovative clinical and early intervention responses, and established a world-first national health surveillance system.
Professor Lubman’s work directly informs public health policy, clinical innovation and health system reform, and supports national advocacy campaigns to address stigma and the adoption of evidence-based policies and practice.
Professor José Polo - Professor, Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, Scientific Head, EMBL Australia.
Professor José Polo is the Head of the Polo Laboratory at the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, the Scientific Head of EMBL Australia and Director of the Adelaide Centre for Epigenetics, University of Adelaide.
He is a biochemist and stem cell biologist who has made seminal contributions to our understanding of the mechanisms underpinning how cells can be changed into other cell types, known as cellular reprogramming.
By developing and combining advanced cell culture and genomic techniques with sophisticated computational approaches, he has been a major force in innovating and advancing the reprogramming and stem cell fields. He is an outstanding researcher who has led his field at the highest level internationally.
