Why did you decide to study science?
I chose to study Science because I enjoyed it all through high school. Science is such a broad field and encompasses so many of my passions – biology, chemistry, the human body, mathematics, so for me it was very natural to study Science as I knew I would love every minute of it, which I have.
What made you choose Monash Uni in particular?
I chose Monash after visiting the Clayton campus on open day. The facilities are amazing and the campus atmosphere is really uplifting and something I wanted to be a part of. Monash also allowed me to complete Science as a double degree with Biomedical Science, so I had the flexibility to pursue multiple passions and potential career pathways during my degree.
What's your favourite aspect of studying science?
I like solving problems through logical and creative approaches, which allows me to learn new things about the world. In maths, solving a difficult problem or proving a complex theorem can involve very out-of-the-box thinking and clever creative methods, which I find more interesting than the problem itself.
What do you plan to do when you graduate?
After I graduate, I want to do research in Microbiology, looking at important human pathogens and discovering new things to help reduce the burden of infectious diseases around the world. My plan is to do an Honours year at Monash next year, and see where that takes me.
What has been the highlight of your science degree so far?
The highlight of my science degree so far has been making friends in my first year. Meeting new people was much easier than I thought and now I have friends with similar interests and passions I can study with or hang out and have fun with.
What's the biggest misconception you had about studying science before you started your course?
I thought Science at uni was a lot more restrictive than it is, when I thought of Science I immediately thought of labs and reports and essay writing, but there is so much more to studying Science. Not only does Science encompass an enormous range of disciplines, I’ve been able to do things like make videos, posters, give group presentations, and even go out and do field work.
If you were to give some advice to someone who's thinking about studying at Monash Science, what would you say?
I would recommend doing your research – look at how the Monash Science degree is structured and the disciplines and subjects you can major and minor in to see if there is a good fit for you, and if it leads into your dream career after graduating. Science at Monash is flexible and can be as broad or narrow as you make it through subject selection, so I would highly recommend Monash for studying Science.
Give us a life hack or piece of advice you live by:
My advice is to be organised as early as possible. Write up a to-do list every day and make sure you’ve incorporated time for breaks and snacks, little rewards spread out through a long study session go a long way in improving motivation.
