Empowering women in science: a reflection on achievements and challenges on the UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science
It is with great pride and reflection that I acknowledge the remarkable contributions and commendable resilience of women scientists in our shared pursuit of knowledge. This year's theme of the UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science focuses on the Sustainable Development Goals and adds a profound layer of significance to our celebration.
From laboratories to field research, women scientists have played pivotal roles in addressing global challenges aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. Our endeavours in chemistry, environmental science, and allied disciplines are critical in advancing solutions for a sustainable future. The diversity of our perspectives and the richness of our collective intelligence empower us to make meaningful strides towards achieving these ambitious goals.
Yet, let us not forget the challenges that many women scientists continue to face on their professional journeys. Persistent gender disparities and biases can impede the progress of talented individuals, hindering the full realisation of their potential. On this day, it is essential that we renew our commitment to fostering inclusive and safe environments where every aspiring scientist, irrespective of gender, can thrive and contribute meaningfully.
As a woman chemist, I take pride in the strides we have made collectively, recognising that our work goes beyond the confines of laboratories. It extends to the heart of sustainable development, influencing policies, shaping innovations, and leaving an indelible mark on the world. Let us use our achievements as a beacon to inspire the next generation of women and girls to pursue their passions and actively engage in addressing the world's most pressing challenges.
Together, we stand at the intersection of science and sustainability, driving progress towards a more equitable and resilient future. May this day serve as a reminder of our shared commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and our collective responsibility to leave a lasting impact on the world through science.
Happy UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science!
