Breaking new ground: CARM in Science hosts inaugural event to champion diversity

Associate Dean (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion), Associate Professor Christen Mirth
In a landmark moment for the Faculty of Science, the first-ever Celebrating CARM Diversity in Science event was held on March 20, marking a significant step toward fostering equity and inclusion within the faculty.
The event, hosted by Faculty’s Culturally and Racially Marginalised (CARM) in Science Network, aligned with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, underscoring the Faculty's commitment to cultural and racial equity in STEMM.
The afternoon brought together students, researchers, academics, and professional staff from across the Faculty, all united by a shared vision of diversity and inclusion.
Attendees engaged in a thought-provoking symposium featuring insightful presentations from distinguished Faculty members, followed by an inspiring Changemakers in Diversity panel discussion. The event fostered meaningful dialogue about the challenges faced by CARM individuals in science and the importance of representation, mentorship, and structural change.
Reflecting on the success of the day, the Faculty of Science Associate Dean (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion), Associate Professor Christen Mirth said:
“This event was a groundbreaking moment for our Faculty. It’s the first time we’ve come together in this way to celebrate and amplify the voices of our CARM community in science. Diversity in science isn’t just about fairness—it’s about excellence. When we create inclusive spaces where everyone feels valued and empowered, we enrich our research, strengthen our innovation, and set a global standard for scientific progress.”
The symposium featured presentations from esteemed scientists, including Dr Khay Fong (Chemistry), Professor Meera Parish (Physics & Astronomy), Dr Sakshi Jain (Mathematics), PhD candidate John Lamaris (Biological Sciences), and Dr Sharan Banagiri (Physics & Astronomy), each sharing their journeys and leading contributions to the field. Their stories resonated deeply with the audience, highlighting both the systemic barriers and the resilience that define the CARM experience in STEMM.
The Changemakers in Diversity panel provided further inspiration, with speakers such as Dr Ayan Dasvarma (Founder of the CARM University Staff Network), Professor Rashina Hoda (Associate Dean, EDI, Faculty of IT), Associate Professor Vanessa Wong (Chair of the EDI Committee for the School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment), Dr Khay Fong (Senior Lecturer in Chemistry) and Dr Amy Chen (Co-Founder of MOSAIC) discussing the transformative power of advocacy and allyship in driving institutional change.
The establishment of the CARM in Science Network represents an essential step toward ensuring that the Faculty of Science is a place where everyone—regardless of background—can thrive.
“We want every CARM individual in our Faculty to know they belong here and for students coming to Monash to see Australia’s racial and cultural diversity reflected in our staff,” said Dr Liu.
“Today’s event is just the beginning. By building this network and fostering these conversations, we are laying the groundwork for lasting change.”
With an overwhelmingly positive response from attendees, Celebrating CARM Diversity in Science is set to become a pivotal annual event for the Faculty, strengthening the sense of community and commitment to a more inclusive future in STEMM.
