New Fellows of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences
Five Monash Medicine Nursing and Health Sciences researchers have been elected as new Fellows of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS), the nation’s learned academy for the most influential experts in health and medicine.
Professor Catriona Bradshaw from Melbourne Sexual Health Centre, Professor Jian Li of Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, Professor Danielle Mazza and Professor Erica Wood from the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine and Adjunct Professor Andrew Wei from Central Clinical School were welcomed to the Academy in a ceremony in Brisbane last night by the Academy’s Interim President Professor Ingrid Scheffer AO.
Fellows were elected in recognition of their outstanding achievements and exceptional contributions to the health and medical sector, and were acknowledged for their clinical, non-clinical, leadership, industry and research contributions.
Monash medicine alumni Professor Michael Hofman, Professor Ego Seeman and Professor Paul Fitzgerald were also among the 27 people elected.
Professor Christina Mitchell AO, Executive Dean of Monash Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences said that the fellowships were well-deserved. “Being elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences is a significant achievement in recognition of a career of outstanding impact,” she said. “Our warmest congratulations and best wishes to our researchers and alumni recognised this year.”

Professor Catriona Bradshaw
Professor Catriona Bradshaw is a clinician-researcher and Head of Research Translation and Mentorship and Genital Microbiota and Mycoplasma Group Lead at the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre and holds an honorary appointment at the University of Melbourne. Catriona is an NHMRC Leadership Fellow, a centre head for the Centre to Impact Antimicrobial Resistance at Monash University, and a co-director of the ARC Research Hub to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance. Catriona is a member of national and international STI guideline committees, a board member of the International Society for STD Research, a technical advisor for the World Health Organisation, a past recipient of the L'Oréal-UNESCO Women in Science Award in 2007 and of the Eureka Prize for Infectious Diseases Research in 2022.

Professor Jian Li
Professor Jian Li has an internationally-recognised track record in the pharmacology of polymyxins and the discovery of novel, safer antimicrobial peptides. He is an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and the American Academy of Microbiology and is the head of the Antimicrobial Systems Pharmacology Laboratory at the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute. He is a Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher in Pharmacology & Toxicology (2015 - 2017, 2022), and an editor-in-chief of The International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents. He is an invited reviewer for 190 international journals and grant and fellowship applications for the National Health and Medical Research Council, Australian Research Council and 26 international funding bodies.

Professor Danielle Mazza AM
Professor Danielle Mazza AM is an internationally distinguished general practice clinician researcher and Head of the Department of General Practice at Monash University. Her research and leadership have been highly influential in reducing inequities in access and improving the quality of clinical care delivered in general practice in women’s sexual and reproductive health, preventive care, the early detection of cancer and antimicrobial stewardship. A strong proponent of evidence-based care, she has led and contributed to the development and implementation of key general practice guidelines used nationwide and provides expert advice to professional, government and policy groups nationally and around the world. She is a Chief Investigator with SPHERE, the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in women’s sexual and reproductive health in primary care.

Professor Erica Wood AO
Professor Erica Wood AO is a haematologist and transfusion medicine specialist. She is Head of the Transfusion Research Unit and Co-Director of the Division of Acute and Critical Care in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. She is an NHMRC Leadership Fellow and leads the NHMRC-funded Blood Synergy research program. Erica is a member of the World Health Organisation's Expert Advisory Panel on Transfusion Medicine; the WHO Advisory Group on Blood Regulation, Availability and Safety; the WHO Working Group on Haemovigilance Tools; the WHO Guideline Development Group on Anaemia and the WHO Guideline Development Group on Human Milk Banking. She has served as a WHO regional advisor in blood safety.

Adjunct Professor Andrew Wei
Adjunct Professor Andrew Wei is a Clinical Haematologist, current National Health and Medical Research Council Clinical Fellow and Co-Stream lead for acute leukaemia and myelodysplastic syndromes at the Peter MacCallum Centre and the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Dr Wei holds a joint appointment as the Metcalf Family Fellow and a laboratory head in the division of Blood Cells and Blood Cancer at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI). Professor Wei has served for more than a decade as chair of the acute leukaemia and myelodysplastic syndrome working party for the Australasian Leukaemia and Lymphoma Group. He is an internationally recognised expert in the field of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) and has led several clinical trial programs that have contributed to regulatory drug approval and change in clinical practice.
