Celebrating GILZRx: A Monash Success Story

A/Prof Sarah Jones (Center) and her Rheumatology Research team received an additional AU$500,000 funding
Exciting news for the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health! Our very own Associate Professor Sarah Jones, Head of the Rheumatology Research Laboratory at the Monash University Centre for Inflammatory Diseases, has secured an additional AU$500,000 in funding from Brandon BioCatalyst's CUREator incubator for her biotech startup, GILZRx, bringing the total amount awarded to $1M.
This funding will support crucial experiments to develop a new anti-inflammatory medicine, potentially revolutionizing treatment for autoimmune diseases and inflammatory disorders. The goal is to create a safer alternative to glucocorticoids, which are currently used by 1 in 20 people worldwide with debilitating side effects.
"My talented lab team has worked hard to find a way to recreate the helpful effects of glucocorticoids, or steroids, without the severe side effects," said A/Prof Jones. "This follow-on funding means we can stop trying to prove our hypothesis and start turning the wheels towards drug discovery."
We congratulate Associate Professor Jones, her team and clinical collaborator Professor Eric Morand on this significant achievement and look forward to seeing the positive impact of their work on patients' lives in the future.
