Consumer involvement award for stroke trial

2024 ACTA award winning team L-R: Prof Monique Kilkenny, Prof Dominique Cadilhac, Dr Jan Cameron, Dr Olivia Brancatisano
Congratulations to Professor Dominique Cadilhac and the investigator team on winning the 2024 Australian Clinical Trial Alliance (ACTA) Consumer Involvement Award for the Recovery-focused Community support to Avoid readmissions and improve Participation after Stroke (ReCAPS) trial.
Early survey work revealed that most patients after an acute stroke return home feeling unsupported by a fragmented health system where communication and self-management support is often inadequate.
In response, the team co-designed the intervention that was evaluated in the ReCAPS trial which was a prospective, multicenter, randomised controlled trial to evaluate a 12-week digital health self-management support package. Recruitment for the trial was completed at the end of 2023 with 466 people with stroke randomised from 11 hospitals across Australia.
The primary outcomes of the trial will be disseminated in 2024.
Co-Director and Head of Research for the Stroke and Ageing Research group, Professor Cadilhac said "This award is a testament to our long journey in the use of codesign methods for intervention development with consumer involvement in our research. Our project underscores the importance of listening to those we aim to serve, integrating their experiences and insights into our work, and striving towards a healthcare system that truly supports patients in their recovery journey.”
