Congratulations to Dr Lindsay Zhou on receiving the Perinatal Research Society Mont Liggins Award and the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Award from the Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand (PSANZ) for his research on cord blood cell therapy.

Dr Zhou and team presented the results of their CORD SAFE clinical trial at PSANZ Congress 2024. The CORD SAFE study is a world-first clinical trial investigating the feasibility and safety of administering autologous (their own) cord blood cells to extremely premature infants. Find out more about the CORD SAFE study.

The team is now ready to move onto an efficacy trial - the CORD-CELL RCT - to see if cord blood cell therapy is effective at reducing disability associated with extreme preterm birth.

A Neonatologist and a PhD Student in the Department of Paediatrics, Dr Zhou said, "It is wonderful to see our world-leading cord blood cell therapy research being recognised, a great example of the translational work that is occurring here at Monash, particularly in relation to the complications of prematurity".

Dr Zhou received a total cash prize of $5000 for the two awards and a sponsored attendance to the Perinatal Research Society meeting in Rhode Island, USA in September 2024.
