NHMRC Clinical Trial and Cohort Studies Grant for stroke research

Thanh Phan and Henry Ma

L-R: Professor Thanh Phan and Professor Henry Ma, 2023 NHMRC Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies Grant recipients

Congratulations to Professor Thanh Phan and Professor Henry Ma on receiving a $2.2 million 2023 National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies Grant.

One of only 25 projects funded nationally, Professor Phan and Professor Ma will lead a team conducting a randomised controlled trial of thrombectomy versus standard medical therapy for stroke with medium-sized vessel occlusion.

The potential outcomes of this trial are reduction in disability and earlier return to work for those who are employed. The clinical arm of the trial is done in partnership with researchers in Melbourne Health and Melbourne Brain Centre, Health Economist from Deakin University, Implementation scientist from La Trobe Rural Health School and Geospatial analysis will be conducted by Professor Phan and the Peninsula Clinical School, Monash University. Studies were designed in this trial to ensure that no stroke patients will be left untreated should clot removal be proven to be effective for medium vessel occlusion.

In 2015, Professors Phan and Ma  and their team were involved in one of the 5 original trials published in The New England Journal of Medicine, which showed the effect of clot removal to reduce disability in stroke patients with large vessel occlusion. While the optimal treatment of medium vessel occlusion is still not known, this study is an opportunity to provide high level evidence for the use of clot removal to treat stroke patients with medium vessel occlusion in the brain.

Head of Neuroscience Research at Monash Health and co-Director (clinical lead) of Stroke and Ageing Research at Monash University, Professor Phan said, "We were fortunate to be involved in one of those ground-breaking trial and hope that this is another opportunity to change the landscape for stroke patients."
