Monash improves standing in USNWR rankings

Monash University has climbed 11 places in the latest US News and World Report (USNWR) 2021 Best Global Universities Rankings, placing equal 48th among the nearly 1500 institutions considered globally.

The University has achieved an improved result in more than half of the indicators that capture overall performance. The global research reputation (12.5 per cent weighting) and number of publications that are among the 10 per cent most-cited (12.5 per cent weighting) indicators each climbed four places to rank 76 and 50, respectively.

Improvements were also seen in two of the three indicators weighted at 10 per cent: number of publications (up four places), and normalised citation impact (up six places).

USNWR also ranks universities in up to 38 subject areas. The University's best-performing subjects were Pharmacology and Toxicology (fourth globally, first nationally), Civil Engineering (18th globally, second nationally), Immunology (23rd globally, second nationally), Economics and Business (26th globally, first nationally), and Chemistry (51st globally, first nationally).

Significant improvements were seen in Computer Science (up 53 places), Physics (up 34 places), Geosciences (up 22 places), and Molecular Biology and Genetics (up 20 places).

Monash University President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Gardner AC said Monash’s excellent overall performance, and across many disciplines, was further evidence of the University’s strong global reputation for research and education.

“Monash University continues to see major improvements in our performance in the USNWR Best Global Universities Rankings, which reflect the impact of our research on a global stage.

“The latest results demonstrate the University’s high quality research, realised through the talent and dedication of our staff, and collaboration with our global network of research partners.”

The USNWR 2021 results follow Monash’s strong performance in the National Taiwan (NTU) Ranking 2020 released earlier this month (October 2020).
