Foundation subjects set the tone for the student learning journey

Charlotte hopes her students focus on fun and fulfilment rather than external validation.

How do you help students build confidence, not just knowledge?

I model mistakes. I show students how to recover. I keep a positive tone at all times, and wherever possible I give students opportunities to improve.

What do you hope your students take away from their time with you? Is there a student moment you’ll never forget, and why?

I hope that students will get a feeling that I truly do care about their learning, and the confidence that I did everything I could to help them succeed. More importantly, I hope that they learn to trust themselves and take control in their own journey.

What do you hope your students remember about you 10 years from now? What mindset do you want your students to carry into their careers?

I want students to develop a growth mindset, and confidence in their capabilities. I hope that they focus on fun and fulfilment rather than external validation.

Teaching foundational units helps me set the tone for a student's entire academic career and beyond. If I can set them up for success there are so many amazing things they can do!

What legacy or ripple effect do you hope to leave behind?

I hope to leave a legacy of truly outstanding educational practice in all areas, and to be known as a supportive and encouraging teacher. I hope that my open educational resources continue to be used and grow as more students contribute to them.

What’s the biggest myth about university education you wish more people would rethink?

That it should be hard for the sake of being hard, and that it should be boring!

What motivates you to continue pushing boundaries in your work?

The fulfilment of knowing I am making a positive difference, and helping people succeed in their goals. The belief that quality education can truly change the world, and everyone has a right to a positive learning experience

What does being a teacher allow you to do that nothing else can?

Teaching foundational units helps me set the tone for a student's entire academic career and beyond. If I can set them up for success there are so many amazing things they can do! Knowing I had a small part in that is why I keep doing this.
