Federal Race Discrimination Commissioner Dr Tim Soutphommasane will speak at a key event as part of this year's Diversity and Inclusion Week at Monash University.

In Challenging Racism: Everyday in every way, Dr Soutphommasane will draw on his extensive work in the field of multiculturalism and national identity, which has been influential in reshaping debates in Australia and Britain. He has written three books, has been an opinion columnist with The Age and The Weekend Australian newspapers and in 2013 he presented Mongrel Nation, a six-part documentary series about Australian multiculturalism on ABC Radio National.

During his five-year appointment with the Australian Human Rights Commission, Dr  Sutphommasane will be advocating for a fairer Australia and driving the commission's efforts to combat racism.

Dr Soutphommasane is a board member of the National Australia Day Council, a member of the Australian Multicultural Council, and a member of the advisory council of the Global Foundation.

Before joining the Australian Human Rights Commission, he was a political philosopher at the University of Sydney and, until last year, was a researcher in the Faculty of Arts at Monash.  

A first-generation Australian of Chinese and Lao extraction, Dr Soutphommasane was raised in south-west Sydney. He completed his PhD at Oxford, where he obtained his Master of Philosophy degree. He is also a first-class honours graduate of the University of Sydney.

‘Challenging Racism: Everyday in every way’ will take place from 10am to 11am on Thursday 28 August  at the Campus Centre Cinema, Ground floor, Building 10 at the Clayton campus. The event is free but registration is essential.
