Understanding Bourdieu's cultural space

The cultural space as conceptualised by the French social theorist Pierre Bourdieu will be discussed at a public lecture this afternoon.
Professor Michael Grenfell from Trinity College, University of Dublin, Ireland will outline the theorist’s own background as an explanation for the derivation of concepts and world view he promoted. Such concepts as field, habitus and capital will be considered as analytical instruments to understand both production and consumption within the cultural field.
Professor Grenfell will also offer examples of studies undertaken by the speaker in the fields of fine art and music and of Bourdieu’s own work.
Professor Grenfell has a long research associate with the areas of education, language, teaching and sociology, especially in the application of the approach of Bourdieu. He knew and collaborated with Bourdieu for more than 20 years.
The lecture is hosted jointly by the Research Unit in Media Studies, School of Journalism, Australian and Indigenous Studies and the School of Political and Social Inquiry.
