Strategies for widening participation and redressing educational disadvantage will be the focus of a series of forums on social inclusion in universities by a visiting academic this month.

Visiting Senior Fulbright Specialist Associate Professor Adam Howard from Colby College, Maine USA, will provide perspectives on strategies for widening participation and redressing educational disadvantage drawn from his extensive research into the relationship between schools, universities and social inclusion/exclusion.

As well as presenting two main forums and a master class, Associate Professor Howard will work with key staff from Monash University, as well as staff from Melbourne University and Victoria University to examine their current inclusion practices.

Monash University’s Professor Jan Kenway from the Faculty of Education said Associate Professor Howard’s visit will allow staff to further develop the current inclusion practices of the University.

Associate Professor Howard has published numerous articles and papers on social class issues in education, privilege, service-learning, and curriculum theory. He is editor of the Journal of Curriculum Theorizing, an interdisciplinary journal of curriculum studies. He chairs the Bergamo Conference on Curriculum Theory and Classroom Practice and is a member of the board of directors of the Corporation for Curriculum Research. He is co-editor of Educating Elites: Class Privilege and Educational Advantage and author of Learning Privilege: Lessons of Power and Identity in Affluent Schooling.

The Open Forum Embedding Social Inclusion in Universities: how advanced are we? will be held at Victoria University, Room Q102e, 300 Queen St Melbourne on Friday 17 May from 12.30 – 3.30pm.

The master class Enhancing Social Inclusion in Universities: Method and Theory will be held at the Faculty of Education Teaching and Learning Space, Room 110, 1st Floor, Building 6, Monash University’s Clayton campus on Wednesday 22 May, from 1 – 4 pm.

The schools’ forum School to University Transition: Enhancing Social Inclusion will be held at the Monash Conference Centre, Seminar Rooms 2 and 3, Level 7, 30 Collins St Melbourne on Monday 27 May, 6pm for a 6.30pm start.
