Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga has been confirmed as a special guest player at an upcoming cricket match to be held at Monash University.

Monash University is set to host the Premier Harmony Day Twenty20 (T20) match on Sunday 2 December 2012 at the Clayton campus oval where Malinga will star for the Hawthorn Monash University Cricket Club.

Malinga, who is regarded by Cricketing legend and newly appointed Melbourne Stars T20 captain Shane Warne as the probably the most dangerous T20 bowler in the world, has signed a two-year deal with the Big Bash League’s Melbourne Stars that was announced at a press conference held at Monash University today.

Director of Monash Sport, Martin Doulton, said having Malinga take part in the Harmony Day match strongly supported the Monash University community’s commitment to cultural diversity.

“Having Malinga play for the Hawks at our Clayton campus for the Harmony Day match will definitely provide an opportunity to bring our students together and create a deeper connection between the University and the Sri Lankan community,” Mr Doulton said.

“Monash recognises the valuable contribution international students make to cultural diversity and the Harmony Day match is intended to celebrate our cohesive and inclusive nature.”

Monash University is a global university, with campuses in Malaysia and South Africa, a research and teaching centre in Italy, has more than 21,000 international students, and expertise in hosting a range of nationalities.

With more than 115 partner organisations in 25 countries, Monash University’s global network gives students more opportunities to experience different cultures and ways of seeing the world.

Mr Doulton congratulated the Hawthorn-Monash University Cricket Club and Melbourne Stars for coming up with this initiative; one which Monash University is pleased to be able to support.

“Everyone at Monash works hard to create unique opportunities to help integrate international and local students and assimilate our international students into the University community,” Mr Doulton said.

“The Harmony Day match and the chance to work closely with the Melbourne Stars in helping our students attend a Big Bash League T20 game at the MCG are ways to help achieve this goal.”

The conference at Monash University was attended by Eddie McGuire and Shane Warne.
