2018 Student Barometer

What is the Student Barometer?

The Student Barometer survey is an internationally recognised survey, administered for Monash University by the independent research organisation, i-Graduate. It gives you the opportunity to tell us what is and isn’t working, and what you think of your university experience to date. The survey forms part of a wider ongoing study, which has collected valuable feedback from more than 2.5 million students from universities in Australia and internationally.

Why is Monash participating in the Student Barometer?

Basically, we want to know your thoughts on what it’s like to be a student at Monash University. We’re particularly interested in your application, arrival, orientation, living experience, and overall experience with learning and support services whilst at Monash. We’ll use your feedback, and that of other students, to help us improve the student experience for current and future students, including yourself.

How is this different to other student surveys?

The Student Barometer survey is one of a suite of surveys in which Monash participates, each collecting anonymous feedback on different aspects of the student experience. There will be a separate opportunity to evaluate your units, teaching staff and course experience later on in the year.

Who can complete the survey?

The Student Barometer survey is open to all current domestic and international students, from foundation to postgraduate research level, who are studying on-campus in Australia. All eligible Monash University students will be invited by email to complete the survey.

What will it ask?

The Student Barometer will ask you questions on your application process, arrival and orientation, learning experience, living arrangements, and experience with university support services. It will also ask you basic demographic questions and questions about your current enrolment, so we can see how different groups of students evaluate their Monash experience. The survey consists of multiple-choice, scaled and open-ended questions.

How long will the survey be available for?

The survey will be open from Thursday 12 April 2018 to Monday 14 May 2018.

What do I get for completing the survey?

Aside from making a positive and valuable contribution to the Monash student experience, including your own, we’ll automatically enter you into the draw to win a share in $6000 worth of prizes, including:

  • 1x $1000 cash prize or charitable donation offered by i-Graduate, and
  • 5x $500 and 25x $100 prepaid Visa Gift cards offered by Monash University.

Refer to the Terms and conditions of the Monash prize draw.

Who will see my responses?

Responses to the Student Barometer are strictly confidential. Only i-Graduate and the Monash University Planning & Statistics (UPS) team will have access to your responses, and your Monash student ID will not be disclosed to i-Graduate. The demographic information provided by you will only be used by i-Graduate and the UPS team to compare results across groups, and identify the groups of individuals completing the survey. All data will only be reported on or published in aggregate, non-identifiable form; however take care not to identify yourself through any written feedback. More information about the collection and use of data can be found in i-Graduate’s Privacy Policy.

Will I get to see the results?

We will email you a short highlights report of key results from the Student Barometer survey in September 2018.
