The next Global Staff Mentoring Program is set to launch in March 2025
Ongoing and fixed-term staff at any Monash location can apply to be mentors (HEW 6 and above, Level B and above, or PEW 5 and above) or mentees (HEW 4 - HEW 10, Levels A - E or PEW 3 - PEW 7).
Many staff members will be eligible to join the program as either a mentee or mentor. Mentoring is a two-way partnership, where both mentees and mentors can benefit professionally and personally.
Consider your personal circumstances and current career stage to decide which role best suits you. As a guide, we encourage professional staff HEW Level 7 and above and academic staff Level B and above to consider joining as a mentor.
Mentors should be willing to share experiences, develop connections and support a fellow member of the Monash community. Mentees should be seeking guidance, be open to learning and have a clear sense of what you would like to achieve through mentoring.
Mentees and mentors will be expected to participate in a one-hour information session before commencing the mentoring partnership. Optional Masterclass training sessions are also available during the program.
Program participants are expected to meet four to six times across the duration of the five-month program at mutually agreed times and locations. The recommended duration for a mentoring meeting is one hour.
Mentoring is a Monash-supported professional development program. You can choose when to meet so long as it suits both participants and your job requirements.
You do not require your supervisor’s approval to participate in the mentoring program, unless the commitment is likely to impact your work in some way. We encourage you to discuss your participation in the mentoring program with your supervisor as part of your career conversation.
Initially mentors and mentees will need to provide information about their areas of expertise or learning and motivations for joining the program in the Expression of Interest (EOI) form. Our online platform will use this information to display a shortlist of potential mentor matches to mentees.
Mentees will then send a match request to their preferred mentor via the platform. When a mentor has accepted a request, the pair will then attend separate information sessions before their connection formally commences. If you are unable to attend, these sessions will be recorded for you to view in your own time.
Unfortunately, given the specific and unique nature of each individual's needs, not everyone can be guaranteed a match. You will be notified if this is the case.
Mentors and mentees will be encouraged to complete a mentoring agreement at the beginning of their connection. This facilitates discussions and encourages agreement on confidentiality, preferred communication methods and meeting frequency.
Conversations during mentoring meetings should remain confidential, unless there is a concern for the wellbeing of either the mentor or mentee or the wellbeing of a third party. In this instance, please contact staff-mentoring@monash.edu for advice.
Following the formal conclusion of the program, you are welcome to continue your mentoring relationship if both you and your mentoring partner agree.
Identify colleagues you admire and reach out to them as appropriate to support your professional growth aspirations and ongoing learning. Take the opportunity to engage with colleagues to share skills and experiences whenever possible.
