Charging or storing e-bikes and e-scooters indoors is unsafe and strictly prohibited.

To support staff and students using e-bikes and e-scooters as sustainable transport options, free e-bike and e-scooter charging stations are available at the N1 carpark, located just outside the James Gormley bike arrival station.

These stations offer a safe and convenient way to charge your device while on campus.

Once your bike or scooter is fully charged or your two-hour session ends, please remove it to allow others to use the station and to help us manage safety and access effectively. For secure storage, use the outdoor bike hoops located across campus.

We’re currently exploring the possibility of installing charging stations at our other campuses.

Charging inside buildings comes with serious risks – especially if safety precautions aren’t followed. The main risks are:

  • Fire hazards from lithium-ion batteries: E-bikes and e-scooters  typically use lithium-ion batteries, which can overheat, swell, or even catch fire if damaged, overcharged, or improperly charged.
  • Unsafe charging practices: Using extension cords or non-approved chargers can lead to overheating and electrical fires. Many extension cords aren’t rated for the power these devices require.
  • Toxic smoke and battery leaks: If a battery fails, it may emit smoke, leak chemicals, or produce a burning smell. These are major red flags and can be dangerous in enclosed spaces.
  • Structural damage and injury risk: A fire in a confined indoor space can quickly escalate, damaging property and endangering lives.
