Food waste solutions
Monash researchers are actively addressing food waste and promoting responsible consumption through innovative technologies and research:
- An innovative freshness label for meat products, developed by former Monash PhD student Debarati Bhadury, Dr Joanne Tanner, and Professor Kellie Tuck, uses natural plant materials to indicate freshness, potentially reducing food waste and integrating with supply chain processes and consumer apps.
- Dr Mark Boulet from Monash Sustainable Development Institute and BehaviourWorks Australia received the End Food Waste Australia Food Waste Action Award for his research on changing household food waste behaviours, collaborating with partners like OzHarvest and Sustainability Victoria.
- Monash University research explores food waste in the Australian hospitality industry, highlighting stakeholder perceptions and practices, and emphasising the need for a holistic approach to change entrenched beliefs and practices.
