Innovative waste management

Monash University researchers are pioneering sustainable waste management and material innovation to promote responsible consumption and production:
- Professor Lian Zhang from the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering developed a method to create sulphur-free light oil from scrap tyres and polystyrene using rapid pyrolysis, eliminating hazardous sulphur compounds.
- PhD candidate Diani Sirimewan from the ASCII Lab led research on using robotics and AI to enhance construction waste recycling, improving recycling quality and reducing landfill waste.
- The Colloids and Polymer Group at Monash University Malaysia, led by Dr Patrick Tang Siah Ying, developed self-healing rubber gloves using sustainable nanocellulose fillers to enhance durability and biodegradability.
