Cyclones remain deadly up to a month after the event
Professor Yuming Guo from the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine led a study published in PLOS Medicine, which found that cyclones, exacerbated by climate change, increase the risk of mortality from cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses for up to 30 days post-event. The research analyzed data from 494 locations across 18 countries, highlighting the prolonged health impacts of cyclones, particularly in Australia and New Zealand.
The study emphasises the need for incorporating epidemiological evidence to better understand and respond to the health effects of increasingly intense tropical cyclones.
