Supporting female cyclists

Monash University researchers, including Dr Lauren Pearson, Associate Professor Ben Beck, Associate Professor Nicole Kalms and Professor Helen Skouteris, have conducted a world-first study revealing that 92% of young Victorian women are interested in cycling, yet their participation is significantly lower than men. The study identifies barriers such as safety concerns, motorist aggression, and fear of sexual harassment.

In collaboration with Melbourne councils Merri-bek, Port Phillip, and Stonnington, the researchers developed the Pedalling Towards Active Living (PETAL) initiative to address these barriers and promote cycling among young women. The report recommends investment in infrastructure, educational programs, and targeted campaigns to increase young women's cycling participation.
