Sustainable procurement at Monash

Monash University was established for the benefit of the entire community. This principle underpins our Responsible Procurement Framework, which has been developed to help ensure the University’s supply chain is socially responsible, environmentally sustainable, resilient and transparent.

The Responsible Procurement Framework sets targets across five key pillars that are reflective of the University’s social and environmental commitments.

  1. Empowering Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Australian businesses
  2. Fostering thriving communities and supporting people with disabilities
  3. Addressing climate change and minimising environmental impacts
  4. Circularity to close the waste / recycling loop and to regenerate nature
  5. Human rights and eliminating modern slavery.

To address each of these targets, Strategic Procurement leverages activities across Monash and its Controlled Entities, including our modern slavery program and the commitments articulated in our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Statement, while building capabilities across governance, systems, capability and resourcing, compliance and performance tracking.

Our Circular Economy Framework is reducing the environmental impact of materials by leading the transition to a circular economy where resources are used efficiently, waste is minimised, and innovation drives a more sustainable campus for all.

Environmental, social and governance concerns are embedded into Monash tendering processes at the operational level. Monash requires prospective suppliers to show evidence of their efforts to meet ethical, environmental and socio-economic obligations. The Monash Design and Construction Standards set out minimum environmental requirements for buildings and construction materials at our campuses, while the ECO ACCORD articulates the environmental design aspirations that new projects must target.
