Funding Solutions: East vs and West Collaborative Philanthropy for Climate Action
Event type: Discussion
View
About the event:
As the world races to identify the funds required to enable a rapid and just transition to a climate-compatible world and to protect people from the worst effects of climate change, eyes have increasingly turned to philanthropy. Monash University and Asia Philanthropy Circle are co-hosting a session to showcase East/West, North/South collaborations which have moved the needle on critical societal issues (including climate action). Approaches to philanthropy across regions have evolved significantly in the last decade despite enduring perceptions of western styles and traditions of giving in the West and East. Dow different voices have raised different issues to the climate, energy, development agendas as more diverse actors have come to the table over the years – and galvanized new action. In the crucial few years left, how can philanthropy, even if seemingly of different ilks, come together in a range of collaborative models to catalyse the changes we need to see? Can approaches to social impact be guided by universal values and goals? This frank dialogue intends to provide insights into the nuances of working in Asia and how to do collaborative philanthropy to reach 2030 goals.

Limits to human survivability with extreme heat and humidity
Event type: Presentation
View
About the event:
The upper limits of human survivability due to heat stress, traditionally defined as a critical wet-bulb temperature of 35˚C, have been forecasted in some regions of the world with climate change. New research shows that when accounting for physiological restrictions to thermoregulation, death due to heatstroke and/or cardiovascular collapse will almost certainly occur at lower wet-bulb temperatures. Geographical regions potentially affected by lethal heat and humidity with climate change will therefore be more widespread.
This event aims to highlight these findings as a driver for increased ambition for both mitigation and adaptation.

Monday, Dec 4: Finance/Trade/Gender equality/Accountability
Day lead: Kris Kathiravel
This thematic day at COP28 will focus on three key aspects: scaling up efforts, improving access, and enhancing affordability. This will involve reforms to the international financial system, the delivery of enhanced concessional support, the development of sustainable finance markets, and strengthening voluntary carbon markets. Additionally, COP28 will introduce trade as a means for climate-smart, equitable growth, including supply chain decarbonization, transition, and resilience. We must also address the challenges that hinder financial support for women, girls, and marginalized groups. This includes ensuring a fair transition and finding solutions to broaden access to finance. The program will also examine accountability mechanisms to turn promises and ambition into tangible results.

Achieving corporate net zero in Australia: What role for carbon credits?
Event type: Panel
View
About the event:
The use of carbon offsets by Australian companies to meet their compliance obligations under Australia’s revised Safeguard Mechanism and to meet voluntary net-zero targets is increasingly under scrutiny. The integrity of Australian offsets has been widely questioned, prompting some reform and ongoing debate. Ensuring international offsets represent real, additional, and permanent emissions reduction or sequestration is even more challenging, with many international offset certifiers facing serious criticism and backlash following the exposure of flawed offset projects. Green Lab academics will facilitate a discussion between experts from the Australian government, from industry and from civil society to help clear the air on offsets. Through this discussion we will explore what we currently know about how Australian companies are using carbon offsets to meet voluntary targets, the extent to which they are allowed to use offsets to meet compliance obligations, and what we need to do to ensure that offsets used by Australian companies represent real emissions reductions on the pathway to net zero and do not undermine other efforts to reduce corporate emissions.
