A New Perspective on Cardiovascular Health Research in Australia
Professor Dominique Cadilhac
A collaborative initiative bringing together Australia's leading cardiovascular health experts is setting new directions for research and healthcare delivery. The work, detailed in a recent publication co-authored by Professor Dominique Cadilhac from the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health, examines Australia's approach to cardiovascular disease (CVD) management.
"Involvement in the national Cardiovascular Health Leadership Research Forum is a massive opportunity to uplift disparate groups working on tackling cardiovascular disease and stroke," says Professor Cadilhac.
With Commonwealth health expenditure reaching $132 billion in 2022-2023 and over $14 billion spent directly on CVD costs, the need for coordinated action is clear. The Cardiovascular Health Leadership Research Forum (CV HLRF), established in 2022, provides the first mechanism for integrated discussion between stakeholders across the healthcare spectrum.
Professor Cadilhac emphasizes the forum's significance: "The shared vision is invaluable for ensuring Australia has a systematic way of comprehensively measuring compliance to guideline recommendations and through quality indicators and data dashboards providing insights to direct resources for clinical quality improvement."
The initiative brings together prominent researchers from Monash University, including Professor Stephen Nicholls and Professor Derek Chew, alongside experts in stroke research such as Professors Cadilhac, Professor Monique Kilkenny, and Professor Natasha Lannin.
"The data infrastructure that is established will pave the way for targeted research, as well as informing policy and practice," Professor Cadilhac notes. "Monash leaders in CVD and stroke research are core to providing unique expertise and insights to ensure the success of this forum and achieving its objectives."
Hosted by the Australian Cardiovascular Alliance, with an initial commitment of $1.5 million through 2025-2026, the forum unites key organizations including the National Heart Foundation, Stroke Foundation, and Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care in a coordinated effort to optimize prevention and improve patient outcomes.
