A/Prof Ed Giles receives the Barry Marshall Award

Associate Professor Ed Giles, clinician–scientist in the Department of Paediatrics (School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health), Monash Children’s Hospital and Hudson Institute of Medical Research, has been awarded the Barry Marshall Award at the World Gastroenterology Organisation Conference. The award recognises Australia’s top mid-career gastroenterologist for excellence in research.

Presented by Nobel Laureate Professor Barry Marshall, the award honours outstanding contributions to gastroenterology. A/Prof Giles was recognised for his pioneering work investigating the microbiome and its role in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in both children and adults.

“I was extremely honoured to receive this award, and to be presented it by Barry Marshall himself,” said A/Prof Giles. “It is thanks to the collaborative research with amazing colleagues across Monash University, the Hudson Institute and our partners that I can continue to work in this fascinating field.”

A/Prof Giles’ research reflects the strong translational ecosystem connecting Monash Health, Hudson Institute and Monash University, where clinician–scientists are advancing care through collaboration and discovery. His key collaborators include A/Prof Sam Forster and Prof Paul Hertzog (Hudson Institute), Prof Helen Abud (Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute) and mentor Prof Katrina Williams (Department of Paediatrics).
