15 August: A COVID-19 update from Monash University

Monash has been advised that a cleaner (employed by the University’s cleaning contractor) and who works at the Louis Matheson Library including Matheson Annexe (building 67) on the Clayton Campus has tested positive for COVID-19.

Their last shift on campus was Thursday 13 August. Preliminary analysis by our contractor and the University Chief Medical Officer indicates that the only close contact the cleaner had was with four other cleaning staff – there has been no close contact with Monash University staff or students identified.  The other cleaning staff have had close contact and are now self-isolating.

The University has also been working with the DHHS on contract tracing and any other additional close contacts (if identified) will be individually notified by DHHS.

Deep cleaning of the library including Matheson Annexe (building 67) and Menzies Building cleaning office that the cleaner attended is underway, and will be completed in time for the building to open as usual on Monday 17 August. Of course, on re-opening the building will remain operating only at the current limited capacity, supporting students without appropriate study facilities at home. No other buildings or campuses are affected.

Our thoughts are with the cleaner and we wish them a speedy recovery.

There is currently no requirement for any staff member or student to self-isolate, unless they feel unwell.
