A hole in one

L - R: The winning team of Brian Man, Luke Wanless, David Chiswell and Greg Powell from the Monash Basball Club and Andrew Headberry from Harris HMC.
Strong winds and threatening rain didn’t prove a handicap for the winners of this year’s Chancellors Cup Golf Day, held at the prestigious Spring Valley Golf Club.
The Monash University Baseball club team of Greg Powell, David Chiswell, Brian Man and Luke Wanless repeated their club’s success in 2010 by again winning this year’s competition.
Now in its 14th year, this popular Ambrose format event attracted 60 golfing enthusiasts from across the Monash community.
Monash Sport business manager Marcus Spencer said the golf day was an outstanding success, provided networking opportunities for the participants and raised funds for Monash University affiliated sporting clubs.
"The annual Chancellors Cup Golf Day is a great opportunity for Monash alumni and corporate supporters to mix in a relaxed environment while helping to raise funds for our sporting clubs," Mr Spencer said.
“This year's event raised over $8500 to that end, and despite the trying conditions; it was a very enjoyable day."
Monash University’s football, baseball and hockey clubs, the Hawthorn-Monash University Cricket Club and the Monash University Centrals Netball Club benefited from the funds raised on the day.
Competitors also enjoyed side competitions, with Mark Lewis winning the longest drive on the seventh hole and nearest the pin on the third hole, Andrew Headberry the nearest the pin on the 10th hole and Leigh Barring the longest drive on the 18th hole.
Martin Doulton, Director of Monash Sport congratulated the organisers on another successful golf day.
"What better way to fund raise for Monash University Sporting Clubs than through a game of golf," Mr Doulton said.
“To our sponsors, supporters and friends thank you for your efforts in supporting our sporting clubs, who make a very important contribution to the overall experience at Monash."
The day ended with an informal gourmet BBQ and presentations to the winners just before the heavens opened and the rain started.
This year’s Chancellors Cup Golf Day was supported by Harris HMC, Broad APM, Programmed Maintenance, Ski, Grant Thornton, Sportime, Norton Rose Australia, Maddocks Lawyers and Latrobe City Council.
