A joint project team from the Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching) and Monash  Library have created a set of interactive online modules to assist students in developing the knowledge and skills needed for good academic practice.

This resource was designed with an educative focus, aligning with the University’s Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedures, which strongly encourage faculties to promote students’ academic integrity skills development throughout their studies.

Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Darrell Evans and University Librarian Cathrine Harboe-Ree last week announced the release of the online modules.

“The project brought together a range of professional expertise to create a pedagogically sound product that responds to a learning need,” Professor Evans said.

“Driven by a demand for more resources to be made available to students in the academic integrity space, coupled with the earlier rollout of Turnitin, we expect to see extensive use of the Academic Integrity online modules."

Ms Harboe-Ree said the response had been pleasing.

“The creators of the modules connected the concept of academic integrity with the real world, providing case study examples and causing people to think and do rather than just read,”  Ms Harboe-Ree said.

“It is pleasing to see the outcome of extensive consultation with students and staff throughout the development stage, as well as what is clearly a good partnership between the Library and the OPVCLT.”

The online modules provide:

  • an overview of the main principles of academic integrity
  • ways to develop skills to ensure integrity in academic work
  • information on plagiarism, collusion and academic misconduct.

There is also an accompanying quiz template that can be used and modified to assess students’ understanding of academic integrity. Faculties are best placed to determine how this resource is used and to coordinate with their schools, departments or units.
