Additive Assurance unlocks the next generation of metal 3D printing

Additive Assurance, a company based on research from Monash University to commercialise a metal 3D printing quality assurance technology, has launched with investment from IP Group.

Additive Assurance has developed a novel sensing technology powered by machine learning analytics to solve reproducibility and reliability issues and enable increased adoption of metal 3D printing across several industries such as aerospace, defence, energy and medical devices.

The company is working closely with leading global aerospace, energy and defence organisations and is now conducting product trials. The in-situ monitoring tool can provide real-time defect alerts with full process traceability, enabling qualification of metal 3D printed parts.

“Additive Assurance is a great example of the companies that we invest in at IP Group," Michael Molinari, Managing Director of IP Group Australia said.

"Additive manufacturing is one of the most exciting areas in deep technology with the potential to change the way whole industries operate.

"We’re delighted to have made this investment and look forward to working with the team to bring this technology to market."

“We are very proud to see another successful venture resulting from world class research conducted in the department. We look forward to seeing the impact of this innovation on the manufacturing sector," Professor Neil Cameron, Head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering commented.

“This is Monash’s second investment with IP Group providing funding and expertise to rapidly translate our research outcomes into real world impact," Dr Alastair Hick, Senior Director Monash Innovation said.

"This project has benefited from significant support by Monash Enterprise team, including Monash Innovation providing funding from the Monash Research Impact Fund, IP patent protection and commercial strategy.

"In addition, the researchers recently completed The Generator’s Accelerator program, providing them with entrepreneurial skills and networks.”

The technology originated from research led by PhD candidate Marten Jurg and Dr Andrey Molotnikov at Monash University in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE).

“We have seen incredible demand for quality assurance in metal 3D printing as industries adopt the manufacturing technique for production parts,” the founder said.

“With IP Group’s support we look forward to enabling the next generation of quality assured additive manufacturing.”
