Biotechnology pioneer and university leader honoured

Provost and Senior Vice-President Professor Edwina Cornish
Vision, integrity, generosity and a clear focus on the public good has seen Monash University’s Professor Edwina Cornish inducted onto the 2013 Victorian Honour Roll of Women.
Provost and Senior Vice-President Professor Cornish has been honoured as a pioneer in the biotechnology industry, a staunch advocate for investment in national research infrastructure, an outstanding contributor to the national science and biotechnology agenda, and a transformational leader in the university sector.
Victorian Minister for Women’s Affairs, the Hon Heidi Victoria MP announced the 2013 inductees at a recent event to mark International Women’s Day, paying tribute to the inspirational talent and commitment of this year’s recipients.
Professor Cornish said it was wonderful recognition and a privilege to join so many inspirational women on the Honour Roll.
“I have been fortunate to be engaged in a career, which provides opportunities not just for myself but for so many others to create change," Professor Cornish said.
"In my various roles as researcher, in business development and management, and now through my position as Provost and Senior Vice-President at Monash University, it has been wonderful to have the opportunity to contribute to such significant outcomes, which have true global impact.
“Anything is possible with a great team."
Prior to her current appointment, Professor Cornish led the development and implementation of the University's Research strategy in her role as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
Formerly, Professor Cornish played a key role in building one of Australia's first biotechnology companies, Florigene Limited. Under her leadership the company established a global reach in marketing operations and in research and development. It successfully commercialised the world's first genetically modified flowers.
Since its inception in 2001 as part of Victoria’s Centenary of Federation celebrations, the Victorian Honour Roll of Women has recognised and celebrated 518 women for their lasting contribution to the community of Victoria.
