Getting to know… Emma Fletcher

Emma Fletcher

Emma Fletcher

Name: Emma Fletcher
Title: Research and Projects Coordinator
Division: Facilities and Services
Dept: VP Admin
Campus: Clayton

How long have you worked at Monash?
Eleven great years. I began in an administration role at the Peninsula Campus while my kids were young. I moved to Clayton two years ago after gaining a promotion.

Where did you work prior to starting at the University?
Ramler Furniture. I was an Adminisration Supervisor in the commercial furniture team. During my time there, Ramler supplied the furniture to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and I was lucky to work at the games in the corporate area. Definitely a career highlight rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous!

What do you like best about your role?
Project coordination and my involvement in the division’s Equity Committee. As part of my role, I am responsible for all equity matters within the division. It is a passion of mine and I’m fortunate to have the freedom to raise awareness of equity issues in creative ways. I’m always thinking of how to do things differently.

I also love that I am part of decision-making processes for the division.

Why did you choose your current career path?
I think it chose me. I’m a big believer in putting my hand up to be part of different projects and that’s how I’ve gained experience along the way. I’m currently studying Regional and Community Development and hope that will further develop my career.

First job?
Treasureway as a Retail Assistant while I was at school.

Worst job?
Telephone sales. It was a means to an end at the time. I started with the company in adminstration but since I talk a lot, they thought I would be good at sales. I wasn’t!

What research/projects are you currently working on and what does it involve?
In regards to equity, we have established a 2012 Plan that is focusing on:

  • Divisional Diversity and Development
  • Equity Awareness
  • Accessibility for All

One action involves a ‘Wheelchair for a Day’ program where project officers are asked to use a wheelchair in their day-to-day activities. This program highlights any accessibility issues across the University.

In regards to divisonal projects, I am involved in coordinating business improvements around Contractor Management, Customer Service, Procurement, BEIMS and Standard Operating Procedures.

Personally, I’m working on my first assignment coordinating a community project.

It’s going to be a very busy year!

What is your favourite place in the world and why?
Nagambie in Victoria. My family and I have an onsite caravan there and spend all summer weekends and holidays in our ski boat on the Goulburn River. It’s a beautiful spot and a lovely community.

What is your favourite place to eat and why?
Lorne Pier Seafood Restaurant. My husband and I have one weekend a year at Lorne without the kids. We always eat at this restaurant and I have so many fond memories of uninterrupted conversations.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?
Attitude is everything.

Tell us something about yourself that your colleagues wouldn’t know?
I received an award from Bob Hawke for my VCE results in Business Management.
