High-flyer Alan Joyce joins Leadership Series

Qantas Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce will be interviewed by world champion yachtsman, businessman and philanthropist John Bertrand this Wednesday evening as part of Monash University’s John Bertrand Leadership Series.

The Leadership Series, run by Mr Bertrand in the 30th anniversary year of the America's Cup win, brings together six of Australia’s finest leaders from the worlds of politics, commerce, science, the military and sport with invited participants from the University’s student and alumni community who have demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities. 

My Joyce will be the fourth guest to be interviewed by Mr Bertrand, with Former Prime Minister Bob Hawke and burns specialist Dr Fiona Wood - Australian of the Year in 2005 - the upcoming guests in the series.

Deputy Chief of Army Major General Angus Campbell, Royal Children’s Hospital Chief Executive Officer Christine Kilpatrick and football legend Paul Roos,have already been guests of the series, which aims to empower, strengthen and inspire. 

Mr Joyce, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Qantas since 2008, has had a long and impressive career in aviation.

The Irish-born businessman worked initially for Aer Lingus, that country’s flag carrier, where he held a variety of positions including network planning, operations research and revenue management. He moved to the Australian airline Ansett (now defunct) in 1996, taking up senior management roles, before joining Qantas in 2000. He became the chief executive of Qantas subsidiary Jetstar in 2003 and five years later was made Qantas CEO and Managing Director. 

As well as his main role at Qantas, Mr Joyce is the director of a number of the company’s controlled entities and a member of its Safety, Health, Environment and Security Committee. He is also the current chairman of the International Air Transport Association. The Australian newspaper named Mr Joyce as the nation’s most influential business leader in 2011.

Alan Joyce will be interviewed by John Bertrand this Wednesday evening at the Clemenger Auditorium, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.

The series is being recorded by the ABC Big Ideas program.
