A Monash staff member is one of four of the Monash community selected in the 2013 Melbourne Vixens ANZ netball line-up.

After a nail-biting loss in the ANZ Trans-Tasman grand final last year, Karyn Howarth, an administrative assistant at Monash Sport and Vixens’ goal shooter, said the team had already commenced pre-season training and was more determined than ever to win the premiership this year.

“We were back at training mid-December,” Karyn said.

“Unfortunately last year we came so close to winning the grand final but lost the game in the final minutes, so this year we are certainly looking at turning that around and taking out the premiership.”

Karyn will be joined by alumna Amy Steel, who studied a Bachelor of Business and Commerce, and current students Johannah Curran and Shannon Eagland, who are studying a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics and a Bachelor of Science respectively.

Monash Sport Director Martin Doulton said netball had typically been a very strong sport at Monash.

“We are delighted to have such great representation in Australia’s number one ANZ Championship team. All four women are great examples of being able to combine work, study and sport at an elite level,” Mr Doulton said.

“I look forward to sharing that winning feeling with our netball superstars as they start the 2013 campaign in earnest.”
