Three Monash academics are among the 32 researchers and business leaders honoured with election as 2011 Fellows of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE).

Professor Michael Cowley, Professor Ana Deletic and Professor David Griggs, have been elected by their peers this year.

Fellowship of the Academy is awarded on the basis of impact and excellence of achievement in the key areas of applied physical science and technology, applied biological science and technology, engineering, information technology or architecture.

The Monash fellows are each driving progress in their respective fields.

Director of the of the Monash Obesity and Diabetes Institute, Professor Cowley develops novel drugs to combat obesity, one of the largest burdens on the Australian health system.

Director of the Centre for Water Sensitive Cities, Professor Deletic researches ways to make more sustainable use of urban water run-off and to adapt urban water systems to the challenges of climate change, a pressing avenue of research in Australia, the driest inhabited continent.

Formerly a leading figure on the International Panel on Climate Change, Professor Griggs has continued to lead research and education on sustainability since joining Monash as Director of the Monash Sustainability Institute and CEO of ClimateWorks Australia.

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Edwina Cornish congratulated the three fellows.

"It is a considerable honour for each of the fellows to have their academic contributions endorsed by their peers in this way. The ATSE is a highly prestigious institution and the fact that nearly 10 per cent of this year's fellows are with Monash is indicative of the quality of our researchers," Professor Cornish said.

Professor David Abramson, Director of the Monash e-Research Centre was elected to the Academy in 2010.
