Monash University has recognised the talent and dedication of some outstanding staff members at the inaugural Vice-Chancellor's Research and Education Awards.

The awards, presented at a dinner in Melbourne last night, recognise inspiring and innovative teachers and researchers from across the University with disciplines from architecture to astrophysics represented by the 14 award recipients.

Professor Ian Chubb, Chief Scientist of Australia, delivered the keynote speech, emphasising the important role of universities in society.

The nine Education awards, presented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Adam Shoemaker, recognised teaching excellence, outstanding contributions to student learning and excellence in honours supervision.

Educators at all stages of their careers received awards, from Dr Andrew Prentice, who has been with the University since 1972 to Ross Brewin, who joined Monash three years ago and has played a pivotal role in developing the architecture program.

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Edwina Cornish presented the five research honours which were awarded for postgraduate supervision, excellence in research by an early-career researcher and excellence in innovation and external collaboration.

Challenges such as geo-sequestration, the evolution of the galaxy and drug development and testing are being addressed by research award recipients.

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Ed Byrne congratulated award recipients on behalf of the University.

"A university is only as good its people and it is incredibly important to acknowledge the excellent people who comprise Monash.

"The disciplinary breadth of award recipients is an indication of the diversity of talent at the University," Professor Byrne said.

"Our researchers are making game-changing advances every day and our educators have the grave responsibility of moulding the next generation and preparing them to face the significant challenges that lie ahead."

"It is clear that the Monash community includes some of the best educators and researchers in the country, if not the world," Professor Byrne said.
