Professor Allie Clemans has been appointed as the next Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) and Senior Vice-President following a competitive global recruitment process.
Widely known across the Australian higher education sector and to the Monash community, Professor Clemans has served in various senior academic leadership roles since joining the University. She has held the position of Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) and Senior Vice-President since August 2023, which makes her well-placed to continue leading and advancing the agenda of the Education portfolio.
Professor Clemans has made instrumental contributions within the Education portfolio at Monash, driven by her commitment to recognise and support educators and achieve a dynamic student experience across all Monash’s campuses, both in Australia and internationally. She oversaw the transformation of teaching and assessment practices, and initiated new approaches to student academic support, digital learning platforms, peer review of teaching, academic integrity and professional development for staff to deliver student academic success.
Renowned across Monash as a collaborative leader, Professor Clemans initiated Project Elevate, a University-wide programmatic intervention in partnership with several faculties to redesign teaching and assessment practices in key courses, which reached more than 25,000 students. The project led to marked improvements in student experience, progress and retention, as well as a significant reduction in student failure.
With an established reputation for bridging education with industry and developing workforce capabilities, Professor Clemans has also made significant contributions to the tertiary education sector at local and international levels. She has designed and led numerous professional learning programs for education leaders both in Australia and abroad, and has led several evaluation projects across adult education and workplace settings. Notably, her collaboration with Women’s Health Victoria in response to the Royal Commission on Family Violence influenced the design of a groundbreaking vocational training course on gender equity.
Professor Clemans has a breadth of research interests in education, with particular expertise in professional development and lifelong learning in Australia. She has published in leading education journals and books in Australia and internationally. Professor Clemans is Chair of the Academic Board of Monash College and is a member of the boards of Open Universities Australia, the Monash University Academic Board, Cranlana Board and the McKinnon Institute of Leadership.
