Monash Vice-Chancellor elected Fellow

Professor Ed Byrne AO
Vice-Chancellor and President of Monash University, Professor Ed Byrne AO, has been newly elected as Fellow to the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE), an independent organisation driving technological solutions to improve and sustain society and economy.
A pioneering neuroscientist, Professor Byrne was elected for his important contributions to clinical neurology and neurological research, most notably elucidating the role of mitochondrial failure in common disorders and human ageing.
“Election as a Fellow of this innovative society is a mark of distinction and I am honoured to be recognised among eminent members of their field,” Professor Byrne said.
“I look forward to working with members of the Academy in addressing global issues critical to Australia's future, particularly the impact of technology, science and engineering on our quality of life.”
Professor Byrne was among 37 prominent Australian researchers, technological scientists, engineering, innovation and business leaders in water, energy, resources and medical technologies elected as Fellows of the Academy in recognition of their impact and excellence of achievement.
Renowned Australian businessman Sir Rod Eddington AO, who was conferred the honorary Doctor of Laws at Monash University in 2011, was also elected a Fellow of the Academy.
The ATSE, which now has more than 800 Fellows, fosters excellence in technological sciences and engineering to enhance Australia's competitiveness, economic and social well-being and environmental sustainability.
As part of their Fellowship, members are involved in providing robust, independent, and valued technological sciences and engineering based advice to government, industry and community.
