Monash Warwick Alliance makes teamwork the moot’s point

Law students from Monash University and the University of Warwick are working together in the first Monash Warwick Alliance International Collaborative Moot.
Law students from Monash University and the University of Warwick are working together in the first Monash Warwick Alliance International Collaborative Moot, to be held at Warwick on 21 February.
Three Monash and three Warwick undergraduate law students have been given a topic to debate and are now working together online to prepare for the moot, which will be staged in a real court setting. Each team includes a mix of Monash and Warwick students.
The Monash students arrive at Warwick on 17 February and will spend the week preparing for the moot with their Warwick teammates.
During their stay the students will travel to London to meet with international law firm Baker & McKenzie, and speak to high school students considering a future in law.
Tim Rankin, President of the Monash Law Students' Society, said moots were generally combative in approach, but this moot would focus on cross-border teamwork to build the communication and advocacy skills of the students involved.
"These collaborative skills will be especially valuable given the current environment of law firm globalisation through mergers and alliances," Tim said.
Lucy Dawson, Monash's Senior Mooter, said the Monash Warwick Alliance moot was a fantastic opportunity to improve her skills, while also giving her the chance to travel overseas for the first time.
"I'm excited to learn how the Warwick students moot and adopt their successful techniques to improve my own mooting style," Lucy said.
Jack Busby, President of the University of Warwick Law Society, said the society was pleased the collaborative moot had been successfully organised with the support of the Monash Warwick Alliance Student-Led Initiative Fund.
“We are one of the first student societies to have secured such funding and now look forward to working with our Monash colleagues and building a productive relationship between our societies, faculties and universities,” Jack said.
