New Catalan language studies
The unique culture of one of Spain's most vibrant communities is set to weave its influence through Monash and Melbourne's cultural heritage in 2013.
The Monash Faculty of Arts and the Institut Ramon Llull have signed an agreement to introduce Catalan language and cultural studies at the University from 2013, through the Spanish and Latin American Studies Program.
Monash academic and Catalan expert, Dr Stewart King said the addition of the Catalan studies program would bring centuries of Spanish cultural distinction to the School of Languages, Culture and Linguistics and enhance the University's research reputation.
"We already have three Monash researchers -- myself, Dr Peter Gerrand and Dr Viqui Gras -- doing intensive research on Catalan topics. The introduction of Catalan language and culture at undergraduate level will further develop this strength," Dr King said.
The Institut Ramon Llull, a Barcelona-based and government-funded Catalan cultural organisation, will fund a Catalan 'lector', or lecturer, to teach two units of introductory Catalan at Monash, while Dr King will be responsible for the cultural and literary component.
The agreement has attracted national media interest in Barcelona, and has the support of the Catalan government.
To promote the introduction of Catalan, the Spanish and Latin American Studies program will sponsor the third 'Made in Catalonia' Film Festival at the Nova Cinema, Carlton from 2 - 4 March.
The Catalan language emerged from the northeastern community of Catalonia in Spain, and is spoken by more than six million people worldwide.
