One-of-a-kind leadership program: MOHO is go

Students

A unique leadership program created by a Monash staff member has attracted the attention of hundreds of commencing Monash students.

A part of the Monash Passport, the Monash Orientation for High Objectives (MOHO) program invites students to think of their future studies and career.

Associate Director of Student Experience and creator of MOHO, Associate Professor Robert Nelson, Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching), said the program was intended to engage students in the time between enrolment and their first week of classes.

“We don’t believe that there’s anything like it elsewhere in the world. It equips students to reconcile their studies with pressing ecological and social topics that form the core themes of Monash research,” Associate Professor Nelson said.

“We could only create such an ambitious program because we have a new Virtual Learning Environment able to handle large volumes of students in a conversational spirit.”

The feedback on the program is already encouraging.

“We’re very pleased with the reactions. There is enormous interest in sustainability discourse as well as radical ideas about wellbeing and social inclusion. It shows that students embrace the challenge of deconstructing leadership and seeing it in ethical terms, with the kind of altruism that Monash encourages,” Associate Professor Nelson said.

Students who successfully complete the MOHO program receive acknowledgement of their achievement through the Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement.

The graduate community has also welcomed the program as a much-needed connection between the University's rich academic disciplines.
