Opposition leader presents to Monash Law

Professor Bryan Horrigan with Honourable Bill Shorten MP and Professor David Copolov
Leader of the Australian Labor Party and Monash alumnus, Bill Shorten MP, was the guest of honour as the Faculty of Law celebrated 50 years of education last week.
Addressing the crowd of current law students and faculty staff, the leader of the opposition spoke glowingly of his time at the Faculty and the role it played in his development.
Attending open days during his teenage years, Mr Shorten never anticipated he would earn the grades required to attend Monash.
Mr Shorten believes the University played a major role him becoming the person he is today, guiding him to choose law, working for a union, and inspired him to become a member of parliament.
Dean of the Law Faculty, Professor Bryan Horrigan, said having someone as influential as Mr Shorten speaking at the 50 years celebration solidifies the high esteem the University is held in by its graduates.
“Mr Shorten reflected on his time at Monash and the significant role his time here played in shaping his career aspirations.
“For 50 years now Monash Law has been providing education opportunities to thousands of students with a passion for law, just like Mr Shorten. We look forward to continuing this fine tradition for many more years to come,” he said.
During his speech, Mr Shorten spoke at length about the challenges associated with increased life expectancy, diverse career and education opportunities, the future workforce, and the state of the economy.
Praise was delivered for their continued work to extend the opportunity of a university education to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students through the Yulendj Indigenous Engagement Unit.
