Professor Sharon Pickering appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) and Senior Vice-President
Monash University is delighted to announce Professor Sharon Pickering has been appointed as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) and Senior Vice-President, commencing immediately.
Professor Pickering was Dean, Faculty of Arts from May 2017 until recently appointed Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) and Senior Vice-President.
Prior to her appointment as Dean, Professor Pickering held a number of leadership roles in the Faculty of Arts, including Head of Criminology (2008 to 2011), and Head of the School of Social Sciences (2013 to 2016).
Throughout her career, Professor Pickering has demonstrated a diverse agenda for cross-faculty collaborations and international engagement, and is widely known for embedding industry engagement in the academic offering.
President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Gardner AC said: “As Dean of Arts, Professor Pickering was highly respected for her leadership qualities and for her outstanding record of transformation and distinctive positioning of the Faculty’s course profile.
“Notable achievements include the implementation, in partnership with the Federal Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, industry and philanthropic stakeholders, of the innovative Global Immersion Guarantee – an award-winning student mobility program, and her significant contribution to changes in a number of the University’s education policies and procedures, working in collaboration with academic and professional staff across faculties and portfolios.
“The leadership qualities, expertise and experience that Professor Pickering brings to the Education portfolio as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) and Senior Vice-President, make her well-positioned to further the University’s priorities for educational excellence.”
With a distinguished body of research and an outstanding publication record in her field of criminology, Professor Pickering is author or co-author to 15 books, 25 book chapters and 47 refereed journal articles.
She has also served as editor or associate editor of numerous leading international journals in her field.
Among her many accomplishments, Professor Pickering was named a recipient of an ARC Future Fellowship in 2011, has led numerous ARC and industry grants and is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.
Her academic qualifications comprise a Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Melbourne, a Master of Arts (Criminal Justice) from the University of Southampton and a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education from Monash University.
Professor Rita Wilson, formerly the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Arts, has taken on the role of Acting Dean of the Faculty.
