Research and productivity key issues for public lecture

The Interdisciplinary Research (IDR) support programs open for 2016.
The importance of research in our universities and the role research has in Australia’s future will be the topic of a presentation by the federal Shadow Minister for Education, Apprenticeships and Training.
The Honourable Christopher Pyne MP, Federal Member for Sturt will discuss the role of research and universities in the federal Coalition’s productivity agenda at a free public lecture hosted by Monash University, next week.
“The Coalition has a plan to get Australian productivity and growth on the rise again. There is the need for governments to engage with universities, and it is important to invest in research,” Mr Pyne said.
“There is a crucial need for that engagement and investment to be coupled with innovation and entrepreneurialism.
“A strong federal government can create the structures that encourage innovation and research within universities which can ultimately propel productivity and growth for Australia.”
In 1993, at the age of 25, Mr Pyne was elected to the House of Representatives for the seat of Sturt. In his time in Parliament he has been Shadow Minister for Justice and Border Protection, and Assisting Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Minister for Ageing, Assistant Minister and Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing as well as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Family and Community Services and Chairman of the Electoral Matters and Communications Committees of the House of Representatives.
Before entering Parliament, Mr Pyne practised as a solicitor and was a senior member of the Liberal Party, serving on both the Federal Executive between 1990 and 1991 and the South Australian State Executive between 1988 and 1992. He is active in the community, being the chairman of Burnside Rotary Youth Scholarship Scheme since 2003, and is a patron and member of many community organisations.
Mr Pyne holds a Bachelor of Law from the University of Adelaide and a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice from the University of South Australia.
