Sinfonia takes on Brazil

Sinfonia in Brazil
It’s not everyday that 12 string players get to travel to Brazil on a whirlwind tour of the country to perform in a series of public concerts.
This is exactly what happened to Sinfonia, a group of students from Monash University’s School of Music-Conservatorium who have just returned from Brazil as part of a joint project with Universidade Estadual de Campinas.
The students understanding of the Brazilian music style was developed during the trip through interaction with Brazilian teachers, composers and students as well as through their experience of the local environment.
Rob Burke, Head of Music at Monash University said Sinfonia works as a small chamber group and demands a high level of commitment and responsibly from the students.
“Travelling to Brazil was a major coup for Sinfonia and the School of Music-Conservatorium. The students take great pride in their performances and this was the ideal time for the group to engage with the wider community.
“Sinfonia has helped to develop the profile of the string program both in Australia and Brazil, creating concert opportunities for the students off campus, and is part of an ongoing relationship with Universidade Estadual de Campinas and Brazil as a whole” said Mr Burke
Under the direction of Elizabeth Sellars, Coordinator of Classical Performance, the Australian and Brazilian students presented the world premieres of Thomas Reiner’s Glitches in an Ancient World and Jonatas Manzoli’s Cantoria.
Along with the two concert debuts, Sinfonia presented a series of concerts, in collaboration with students from Universidade Estadual de Campinas, featuring the work of Handel, Puccini, Rautavaara, Vivaldi, Piazzolla and Peixe.
Students from the School of Music-Conservatorium will perform a series of lunchtime concerts every Thursday in the Music Auditorium at Monash’s Clayton campus.
This is an opportunity for the wider community in and around Monash University to enjoy a diverse range of outstanding musical performances.
