Surf's up
Some of TeamMONASH at Lennox Heads
TeamMONASH™ rode the waves to fourth place at the recent Australian University Championships surfing competition.
Team captain Heather Ruberl led the University’s largest ever team of ten to fourth overall, ranking fifth in the women’s competition and fourth in the men’s.
The event was held at Lennox Head in northern New South Wales earlier this month.
Heather, who is in the final year of her Economics (Honours) degree at Clayton campus praised the efforts of the team some of whom were very new to the sport.
“Although myself, Daniel, Oliver, Thomas and Camilla competed in the event last year, the others were first timers,” Heather said.
“We didn’t train for this event in Melbourne, although we did surf at Byron Bay and also braved a rock jump to surf Lennox Head in the days leading up to the competition.
"We’re really grateful to Monash Sport for providing us with accommodation while we competed.”
The Australian University Championships surfing competition was held in conjunction with the 2012 Northern University Games and offers an experience for avid surfers to take on the best in the country.
