The ethical dilemmas of national security

World renowned bioethicist Professor Jonathon Moreno
The future of national security will depend partly on the practical applications of neuroscience, according to world-renowned bioethicist Professor Jonathon Moreno.
Professor Moreno is the David and Lyn Silfen University Professor of Ethics at the University of Pennsylvania, USA. He will discuss the innovative US Defense Advance Research Agency and the roles of the intelligence community and university science departments in preparing the military and intelligence services for the 21st century at a free public lecture this week, hosted by Monash University’s Centre for Human Bioethics.
He believes the future of national security will depend partly on the practical applications of neuroscience to warfighter psychology, personal enhancement, methods of interrogation, and new defensive and offensive weapons systems.
Professor Moreno, the author of Mind Wars, has served as a senior staff member for three presidential advisory commissions, including the current bioethics commission under President Barack Obama. He is a Senior Fellow at the Centre for American Progress in Washington, DC, and in 2008-09 served as a member of President Obama’s transition team.
Mind Wars: Brain Science and the Military will be held at the Monash University Law Chambers, 555 Lonsdale St, Melbourne on Thursday 11 April from 6.15 – 7.30pm.
