The market that makes a difference

Urban Market will bring together a host of providers who emphasise sustainable, locally produced and fair trade products.
Our first Urban Market will be held at Clayton on Wednesday 13 April. The market will be a celebration of all things sustainable, and will showcase a range of boutique stalls dedicated to sustainably sourced, locally produced and fair trade products.
Environmental Sustainability’s Karen Freidin said the Urban Market is an opportunity for the campus community to engage in a sustainability revolution – to source, design, produce and exchange a range of items that promote environmental mindfulness, health and wellbeing.
“Urban Market will be a full sustainability experience combining food, music, products and ideas. The event is designed to spark proactive conversations about sustainable living, and really get people talking about how to make everyday sustainability a success.”
Urban Market will run from 10am to 3pm on Wednesday 13 April in the vibrant new Northern Plaza at the Clayton campus. A broad range of stall holders will be showcasing all things vintage, recycled, upcycled, remade, fair trade and organic.
Live music will keep you entertained throughout the day, and a range of food and beverage stalls will whet your appetite while you wander the marketplace.
You can:
- Grab a crêpe at the Crêpes for Change not-for-profit mobile van and help support homeless youth throughout Australia.
- Pick up a unique piece of handmade, ethically-imported jewellery at SisterWorks. Your purchase will help vulnerable women work towards financial independence through entrepreneurial skills development.
- Peruse a range of fair trade footwear, sporting goods and clothing at Etiko’s pop-up stall.
- Stock up on specialty coffee beans produced by local farming communities in Timor Leste at the WithOneBean coffee cart. While you’re there, why not grab a latte to go in a KeepCup reusable coffee cup?
- Ditch the nasty chemicals in your current beauty regime, and invest in skin and health care products that give back to the earth at Naturally Enigma.
- Fill up your drink bottle at the Yarra Valley Water Choose Tap Trailer and help reduce landfill waste from purchased bottled water.
- Have a chat with Flexicar about local car sharing opportunities.
- Stop by the stalls of some of Monash’s sustainability-geared student groups, like The Bikery, Monash Permaculture and Fossil Free Monash, and have a conversation about ways you can get involved on campus.
A series of short talks will also run between 12pm and 2pm in the environmental sustainability tent, located on the Lemon Scented Lawn. Session times are as follows:
- 12pm - Permaculture in Practice
- 12.30pm - Sustainability@Monash
