There was a 7 per cent increase in the number of staff and students using the train and public bus services to reach University over the past 12 months, according to a recent survey conducted by the Office of Environmental Sustainability.

The 2012 transport survey, conducted across all campuses, showed 65 per cent of staff and students are using sustainable transport to get to campus including public transport, carpooling, riding and walking.

However, the number making use of the University’s car pooling fell over the year, and there was a slight increase in the number of lone car drivers making their way to the six Australian campuses.

The survey also showed 3 per cent of staff and students ride to campus, 8 per cent  walk and 6 per cent use the intercampus buses.

More than 5600 people completed the survey, which was designed to assess the results of the University’s campaigns to persuade staff and students to use more sustainable forms of transport.

Paul Barton, Director of the Office of Environmental Sustainability. said it was heartening to know that the Monash community made an effort to use public transport.

“I am very pleased to see more staff and students using public transport to get to campus. This is particularly true for the Clayton campus where the 601 express bus service was introduced 18 months ago," Mr Barton said.

"The commuter experience has improved tremendously with approximately 3600 people using this service daily. I think quality and consistency of public transport are essential to maintain the commuter’s faith in the service and staying out of cars.

"We will be using the survey data to convince the State Government to invest in further express bus services to Clayton and other campuses."

The winner of the iPad for completing the survey was Amanda Thompson. Amanda, a law student, travels to the Clayton campus on the train and 601 bus. She looks forward to using her iPad during her journey to and from campus.
